huh? so you want better for equal money OR equal for less money right?

There no better for equal money at a stretch you can look at CZ 16-80. If you have the money this IS the lens you want on your A77. period.

Equal for less money I guess would along the lines of tamron 17-50 but I wouldn't call it equal. 16mm matters a fair bit compared to 17mm if you like the wide angles. 16-50 is weather sealed, supports DMF with focus peaking. Its sharper than others, people claim it to be near 'G' lens quality if not equal. Balances very well on A77.

There is also sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 'C' version that people claim is good. If you don't need constant f2.8 you can take a look at that too.
