Manual focus for sports, kids, etc?

Since I got my DF, I've been thinking more about manual focus lenses. I bought a 55mm 3.5 micro lens and it's tons of fun, but I only use that lens to take pictures of things that don't move.

Do people still use manual focus these days to capture fast moving action like sports or kids? Even with a nice aftermarket viewfinder, it seems nearly impossible to do.

And back in the days before autofocus, how did photographers get these kids of shots in focus, especially when shooting at big apertures? It's something I'm interested in learning just for fun.
