24-120mm F4 vs. 28-300mm (on D300)

Current rebate program put these two lenses at around $995 and $895. They are designed for FX. I only have D300 now and eventually will get a FX body. So I will not buy any DX lens. The 18-200mm is about $595 now.

How do 24-120mm f4 and 28-300mm perform on DX? From what I read they are both good lens but not great lens on FX. My zoom lens only reach to 55mm. 28-300mm sure has vast advantage on the focal range but the 24-120mm f4 is way better than it for the same range. I will pick one of the two. So what do you think if you are in my situation? I have the fixed 300mm F4 and eventually will get one of the 70-200mm expensive lens. Thanks.
