Unleashing the EX2

Unleashing the EX2

I’ve been trying out alternative raw converters to see if there is anything worthwhile out there. Here are three shots from 2013 converted with Photo Ninja. The EX2F is not officially supported but it works, probably thanks to the NX camera support.

One interesting thing I noticed is that 12 mp files are usually 4000x3000 pixels, but now I get out 4070x3044 and completely uncorrected color, distortion, and vignetting.

As you can see on the images, they are only corrected for color. (With no references, srgb and on an uncalibrated screen mind you,) The corners now reveal black edges and we see barrel distortion. These can be corrected but I like to get it as raw as possible. I think the colors look nicer with Photo Ninja.

Sharpness is about the same, maybe slightly better than Samsung RAW but luminance noise is way better. Or rather the lack of noise reduction. On the Samsung converter zero on the noise reduction slider is nowhere near zero, leading to a loss of fine detail.

Take a look at 100% to see how much you can get out of this little cam! Also check the bottom edge on all shots for strange looking artifacts that are otherwise automatically cropped away.

Maybe I should also test high ISO to see if there is a way around the ISO 800 and higher auto NR.

Interesting artifacts.

I can upload Samsung RAW converter versions for comparison.
