Build quality and aesthetics are icing on the cake, IMHO. The optical performance has to be there first. Doesn't this call into question when was the last time Pentax designed a truly superior performing lens? Do they still have the expertise?

You are raising a question I've been thinking about as well.  I think the new pro 70-200 will tell something.  It needs to be much better than the very good Tamron 70-200 because they will want about 3X the price for it.  Folks will have excellent versions of this lens from the big makers to directly compare with it.  And, with firmware 1.02 on the K-3 has improved AF-C even more, making it the top aps/c camera out there (IMO) the camera isn't an excuse.  This is risky business and will be a very interesting release.  Pentax could break out with this or their current lens expertise could be exposed in this one move.

Cheers.
