This will make at least as much of a difference in IQ as a new lens - especially with the A-65. Once you go above ISO-400 RAW becomes more and more of an advantage. WB, highlight recovery, shadow recovery and NR are much better with RAW. Even with ISO-400, you will gain.

What software would you recommend for a raw newbie ? User friendly, if possible.

I've only used Lightroom and Sony IDC.  IDC is too basic and slow (32-bit).  LR is full featured.  I like it a lot, but have been using it for 2.5 years now.  Basic processing is pretty easy, but finer points require time to learn.  Also, there is quite a bit of good information about using LR on the web.

You'll need to spend some time learning the file management aspects of LR if you go that route, but once learned, it's second nature.
