Can a quality clear filter improve an image?

I recently purchased a Voigtlander lens from CameraQuest, and with it came a B+W MRC Nano XS-Pro clear filter.  My first impulse was to turn around and sell the filter for a few bucks to put toward my next lens purchase.  But then I wondered: can it improve images at all?

I am not interested in the physical protection a filter may provide; that's not an issue in my situation.  But would a quality filter like this ever help to increase contrast, reduce flare on a flare-prone lens, or in any other way improve a photo?
