The biggest contributing factor to profit margins is what the market will stomach. If Canon do (and I certainly think they will) release a high end aps-c I think the market will be happy with a relatively high price point.

Yes and no. It's risky. A subset of users would be OK with a $3000 price point - namely wildlife shooters. Lots of people wouldn't.

Some will moan but those that want a high pixel density will pay the money. Surely that is what a high end aps-c is all about.

It depends. If there is a $1200 premium vs competition APS-C cameras then there needs to be some justification for it.

Who said anything about the competition. I am purely looking at where the gaps are in the market. There are plenty of photographers out there at sporting events with 600mm glass and a 1DX or 3. There are also plenty out there who photograph sports where lighter kit is needed as a 600mm is just not practical. Same with wildlife, the sit in a hide group want different kit to the roaming photographer. Travel is another area where lighter kit rules and for many APS-C is the king. Canon know their market far better than we do.

On the lens front it really doesn't matter whether the consumer buys an aps-c or a FF, people with the money will still buy L glass. As long as Canon get the price right, which I am sure they will, then it will be profitable for them.

Take a look at the price of a 300mm 2.8 and a 400mm 2.8 and see what you think about which one Canon would prefer people buy. Then compare the 300mm 2.8 to the 70-200 2.8. Again, see which "L" lens Canon would prefer people buy.

Canon would prefer any of them, it is volume coupled with longevity that counts. If for instance Canon can sell a cheaper lens in good numbers then the mark-up becomes greater per unit. Canon know that compared to a 100-400 only a few 600mm lenses will be sold. I am willing to bet Canon have made a lot more from the former.

C&C always welcomed.
