Portrait photographers - what AF area do you use and why?

A57 here and I have historically used Zone AF (and AF-S).  I don't have a good reason for doing so other than I can easily move my zone of focus right, left or center.

Shooting people standing still my Achilles heel is I get more soft focus shots (and not pleasing soft focus) than I would like and regardless of the lens used.  I tend to rely on center weighted metering.  I wonder if Zone AF is not ideal for portraits, or maybe one of the other modes is better.

I do NOT focus and recompose, so it's pretty much point, compose, half trigger for focus, green light, click.

I'm especially interested in hearing from folks who do a lot of head shot or other related portrait shots (and are happy with the focus and clarity they are getting).
