I have done that exact comparison because I was intrigued as you are. As you can tell I ended up buying the lens and compare it myself.

Here are the links:

For size:

I already had a pretty good idea about the size, because I own the 12-50 (and since recently also the 40-150), and I have handled a 12-40 just once in a store (after that, there have been no more sightings of 12-40s in Belgium...)

I don't mind thickness and weight : in fact it will feel more familiar.

A close resemblance in look (though a bit thinner) is also the Voigtländer Nokton 17.5mm.

For resolution:

That resolution comparison is very useful.

Amazing how much difference in the small lettering on Cien Anos de Soledad.

(Hey, and I also own "Photo:BOX".  At first glance I thought it was my bookshelf.)

Question remains how the lenses perform when stopped down a bit (I am assuming these were all wide open shots)?

And also this: I have always understood that the 12-50 is best at 12mm (indeed it is : very good for its price), while getting progressively less impressive near the tele end.  it would be interesting to see also some shots of the book shelf at 40mm (where the 12-50 is also SLOW, thus less handholdable).

Hope this helps

Thanks.  Very helpful.  I had missed those threads.
