Why wonder?

I found this thread and some of the expectation/comments puzzling, and at the same time amusing !!

The 12-40mm is a lens designed as a PRO lens with as little compromise as possible. On the other hand, the 12-50mm is clearly a lens designed for maximum versatility and low cost, and can be expected to have ordinary speed and resolution. Now, go directly compare their image qualtiy. What??

Why not?

Sometimes the less expensive lenses can be surprisingly good.

And it is always useful to see the actual differences in IQ, in order for everyone to decide for themselves whether the upgrade is worth the price of admission.

It's like a thread asking for comparison of the Voigtlander 17mm f/0.95 with that of the Olympus 17mm f//1.7 in how they fare in street shooting situations, and posts commenting that the Voigtlander is clumpsy, slow focusing, intimidating strangers, ... .

Also between those two, a comparison of shots with complex subject in the exact same real world circumstances would be interesting, to compare the imaging characteristics of each lens: how they each render the scene and e.g. what the difference in DOF really looks like.  Other characteristics (like size and weight, having AF or not) are facts that one can assume the interested parties are well aware of: everyone can attribute importance to such facts according to personal preferences.  But just the direct IQ is interesting to read about and see samples of.

A similar comparison would also be between the ZD14-42 SG, the ZD14-54 HG and the ZD14-35 SHG each shot at e.g. 14 and 25mm, wide open and stopped down.
