Using AF-ON (back button focus) on P/S/A/M without chnaging AUTO mode?

Hi everyone.

I have a D7000 and prefer using back button focusing (using the AE-L button)

My wife will sometimes use my camera and prefers to use AUTO mode and the traditional shutter button focus.

It seems like I cannot setup AF-ON for P/S/A/M modes without also changing the setting on AUTO mode.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there no way to maintain distinct settings on AUTO mode while toying around with everything else? It would be nice to have her simply switch to AUTO and simply point and shoot.

I realize we can setup custom settings using U1 and U2 but I already have specific setups attached to those settings.

Thanks for any insight.
