Form over fashion, we've reached a point in terms of ergonomics that a Camera can only really look like 10 different variants of the same or people simply won't accept it as comfortable ergonomically and aesthetically to call it a camera. In the early days of digital photography camera manufacturers experimented with articulating lenses in the same way we now have articulating viewfinders. People didn't want it.

Lets face it, people pretty much know what a camera is and what they want from it. It just so happens camera body design reached its peak in the 1970s. People didn't accept "innovations" in design like the Sony "cyber"shot DSC-F828.
