I don't understand

As a fairly experienced enthusiast photographer I continue to be thrilled with my D300.

I keep reading about the D7100 but am struggling to understand the logic as to why I need to upgrade. I am posting here under the assumption that many current D7100 shooters have upgraded from a D300/D300s and can provide some insight.

My ultimate camera would be my current D300 with the 70D's articulating touch-screen and Movie Mode. From an IQ perspective 12 MP is more than enough and I seldom shoot above 1600 ISO although an improvement in noise reduction would be welcome.

To this point I have attached both Chroma and Black noise comparisons as provided by DPReview. Unless I am reading the graph incorrectly there is little difference in Chroma Noise amongst the candidates but there is some improvement in Black Noise in higher ISO ranges.

I understand that it may be unfair to compare 24 MP sensor noise to 12 MP sensor noise patterns but if you don't need 24 MP...what's the point?

Is the D7100 IQ really that much better than the D300's?

IMHO...the D300 is still a better camera in every other way...for my purposes anyhow.

My next step is to rent a D7100 for a day and do a realistic IQ comparison for myself (I am not a pixel peeper).

Please comment...Thanks for reading.

(I am assuming the D300s and D300 have similar noise characteristics)
