Why does Canon not make such light zoom lenses anymore ?

I completely agree - by way of example I have a 50/1.8 MkI bought in 1990-ish which still cuts the mustard today, and my original 100/2.8 macro was optically superb (though the AF was dire). But my relatively expensive 35-135 USM from the same era is nowhere near the same image quality as today's designs.
