Your manual will tell you how to set the built-in flash to trigger the off-camera flash using a short burst of pre-flashes then not fire itself. In reality the built-in flash does fire to trigger the off-camera flash but it does so at a very low intensity so that the light from the built-in flash doesn't add light to the final image.

The best way to use the off-camera flash is to put both the camera and the flash in Manual modes. Set the shutter speed to about 2/3 stops below the sync speed given in the manual to make sure that any off-camera flash will properly sync. Chose an aperture that will give you the desired depth of field. For portraits that is generally around f/5.6 to f/11 so that the entire subject, front to back, will be in focus. Start with an ISO of 200 and adjust the off-camera flash power within the limits of 1/4 to 1/2 of full power. If you are still underexposing at 1/2 power then raise the ISO slowly until you get a good exposure.

The alternative is to buy a set of budget priced RF triggers like the Yongnuo RF-603 IIs, which will completely eliminate the built-in flash and which are much more reliable off-camera flash triggers than the built-in flash.
