Re: Buying new lens - 17-40,17-55,24-105?

I use the 17-40 and the 24-105 on my crop bodies. Both are good, but the 17-40 may be a little sharper, and it is compact and light for a zoom. Both L zooms have excellent flare resistance. I use a fast prime for low light, so the 17-55IS did not appeal to me, given my intended uses.

If you want one zoom and need F2.8 for lower lighting, you should probably get the 17-55IS. It is about as big and heavy as the 24-105, with a similar price tag. I have seen lower prices on the L zoom lately. I was not attracted to the 15-85IS, because of the F5.6 at the long end. I prefer a fixed aperture. There is no doubt about the utility of the focal length range.

Your needs and intended use should dictate which lens you choose.
