Sorry hit send before I wrote any TXT!!

Anyway, anybody using Topcons currently on their NEX (or A7/r). I've read some on these Exacta mount lens and they have a very good reputation in general. Just curious if any one here uses them on a NEX often and how they perform. Also in term of image quality, is there a difference in model years/vintage? Specifically between the older (I believe) "Auto Topcon" with shutter actuating bar attached to lens versus the "RE Auto", versus the "RE GN" models.

Does the shutter actuating arm get in the way of the grip on say a NEX 6 (what I use) when mounted, or get in the way of usage (changing aperture, manual focusing)? Asking this about the "Auto Topcon" because they appear to be "cheaper" on the used market than the other two models.

Thanks for any insight and advise.

Rick

Be aware that there are more lenses on eBay for the leaf-shutter Topcon SLR than for the RE-Super.

It is the latter type that you want - the ones with Exakta type bayonet mount. I have 3 or 4 and they are good lenses.

The coating improved in the last versions (the GN ones).

Hi,

Thanks for the response! I do believe the Auto Topcors I'm asking about are Exakta mounts (as are the Auto RE and RE GN models). The Topcon UV lenses are for the leaf shutters.

Thanks again!

Great shots - have looked at some of the Exacta mount Topcons, may need to pick one or two up. I have a couple of Exacta mount lenses (Domiplan 50mm and Schneider-Krueznach 13.5cm) that have the shutter release actuator on the lens - this lever also actuates the aperture, so I have to push it in even when shooting on my NEX7 or A7R - doesn't get in the way on either camera and results (at least for the S-K) are pretty decent.

So I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a small lot of Topcon "Auto" lenses at a GREAT PRICE. Received a 35/2.8, 58/1.8 and a 100/2.8. all in black and all with the shutter actuating arm. Also in superb optical and mechanical condition.

My original post was stating "concern" over this shutter actuating arm and if it would get in the way when mounted on the Exakta adapter and then mounted to the NEX 6. The plain "Auto" Topcon lenses were made for the early Topcon R, and B and C SLR's. The shutter release button was on the front right side of the camera. The lens, when mounted, had the arm postioned directly over the shutter button on the body. One then pushed the "shutter" button on the lens arm, which in turn depressed the shutter button on the camera body.

Here are pictures of the lens attached to my NEX 6 via an Exakta adapter. Actually looking pretty cool! The adapter places the arm well away from the camera body. FOR ME, it is not a problem at all and does not get in the way of either holding/gripping the camera or turning the focus ring or aperture ring. I have small to medium sized hands so the actuating arm does not pose a problem whatsoever. Those of you with larger hands, it's possible it may slightly hinder your grip on the body. These "Auto" Topcons are generally priced much less than their later, more common and familiar "RE Auto" and "RE GN" brethren. Hopefully the image quality is equal to those series of lenses, which seem well regarded. Not a lot of data on the web about this ( the plain "Auto") series of lenses.

Now to get out and take some pictures with these beauties!!

Here is a picture from Captain Jack's Exakta website showing the Auto lens attached to the Topcon R SLR and it's position in regards to the shutter release button.

You should be able to lock the shutter release/ aperture control so that the lens is fully manual. Try push-and-turn.

Thanks! Learn something new on this forum all the time :-) - worked on the S-K, but not on the Domiplan (very cheap lens - will likely dissect to see what makes it work and see if I can clean the dirty aperture blades :-) ).

Thanks.

I look forward to seeing pictures from those lenses. You may want to keep your eye out for the 135/3.5 preset, it's great(the ducks above), there is also a 135/2 which is well regarded.

Lightshow,

I checked your lens inventory, man I thought I was bad but you got me beat by a mile, I'm kind of envious though.

The Domiplan is I think a three-element lens. Could be useful when you want a slight softness, as in some portraits.
