A99, AF-D, Continuous Shooting “Hi”, Auto Focus Area "Spot", AF Range

The more I use the A99 the more I discover how much I need to learn (but it's lots of fun).

Well, I getting ready for a week long adventure to photograph BIF in Florida and I am trying to figure out if my A99 w/70-400mm G has more capability than I am using (answer is obviously, yes). One thing I am trying to make sure I have correct in my head is how AF-D works with other settings:

1) AF-D with Continuous Shooting “Hi”

2) AF-D with Auto Focus Area "Spot"

Quote from Gary Friedman's Book: TIP: Surprisingly AF-D doesn’t work in Sports Action mode, in T10/8 or ”Or Movie mode.).

I have my camera set to Continuous Shooting “Hi” and AF-D is still selectable (not greyed out), am I missing something?

I read that AF-D is just like AF-C except it adds another 102 focus points to the 19. This confuses me because I normally like to use Auto Focus Area "Spot". How do all these focus points relate to Spot focus (or even WAF)?

I normally prefer to use AF-S or AF-A but want to try AF-D on this trip but don't want to be messing around and screwing things up.  Hopefully, I can get some practice with AF-D in the next couple days.
