SX50HS Autofocus Advice Wanted

I've been testing out my SX50 at its maximum focal length.

Does a complex pattern of tree branches confuse the AF system?

I realize motion blur is a constant concern at max FL, but it seems like the tree branches threw off the AF.

I did better with subjects like license plates on far away parked cars. Much sharper. Could it be that pointing the camera upwards towards the trees is a shakier angle?

I did get some reasonable shots using MF, BTW. But I wondered why I couldn't simply set it to infinity. Do you guys think the enlarged focus square is reasonable?

Conditions are bright and clear. I was shooting a 1/800 to 1/1600, f/6.5 to f/8, ISO 100 to ISO 400.

I know I'm asking a lot at these lengths. Any advice for best luck with SX50HS handheld long-shots will be appreciated!
