Wouldn't it be good for freezing faster movement indoors too? Dance floor, bowling, I dunno, the 1/180th doesn't seem like it's quite fast enough.
Think most of people mis-concept about flashgun high speed sync working logic.
When flashgun in HSS high speed sync mode, it actually work more like a video light with continuous light. Under HSS mode actually loss about 2.3 stop flash power. Imagine a GN56 flashgun is now at GN24.
When in HSS mode with flash pump out continuous light mean it does not provide fast flash light anymore and more probably it can't stop fast motion at all.
If you are interested, scantips.com provide a very details explaination about the disadvantages about using Flashgun in HSS mode. Below the link to it.
Auto FP mode (HSS) - scantips.com
I read some Chinese websites, they prefer camera with full power flash + ND filter over camera with flash in HSS mode.
Thanks to every explaining HSS. I need to get back to threads where I ask something in a more timely fashion. This link was quite helpful. I think that it will do what I was thinking, let me explain. I'm thinking of indoor scenes where the ambient light isn't good, but it's strong enough to still be in your shot and so movement outside the range of the flash is in the shot and not frozen. So with HSS I should be able to light something nearby, and then have the shutter speed freeze both foreground and background. Seems the power in this new flash will be put to work.
Does anyone know if we'll be getting stroboscopic flash?
