SX40 Struggling to focus

Mostly I have used my SX40HS for what I'll call non critical photography. But today I was attempting to photograph some birds and found the camera to be back focusing some. Shooting at about 300mm as wide open as I could with the bird just beyond minimum distance I consistently got back focus. Refocus, refocus, refocus .. press and pray! When the camera achieved accurate focus it was VERY good. These are not SOOC. Some adjustment in ViewNX2 as the light was very flat.

Using the small focus box and most auto features turned OFF. Focus bracket OFF.

Anyone else notice this issue??

Here is one of the good ones. First is full frame.

Full frame taken a full resolution.

Many images the bird was soft and the branch behind was sharp.

Next is a close crop to show the available detail when focus is achieved.

The SX40 does quite well .. if you can get it to focus accurately!

Any one with experience on this issue I'd like your comments or suggestions.
