Based on all the above I'm pretty sure it's a processing artifact, nothing specific to the LX. FWIW I have the LX-3 and 5, both of which are great compact cameras. The µ4/3 cameras are a definite step forward, if you decide to take the plunge.

In the meantime, always shoot RAW and experiment with your exposures to lessen how much manipulation you need in post. Outdoors I tend to use matrix metering with -1/3 stop exposure adjustment.
