Street Photography Problem, or just me?

Hi there, i am new to this forum and would appreciate your advice.

I am new to street photography. I have a small mirrorless camera which is quite discreet. However, in the short 2 months and less than 10x I was on the street, I had 3 unpleasant reaction from people.

1. I was shooting in a shopping mall and was told off by the security guard saying photography is not allowed.

2. I took a picture of an old lady from far, like 20m away and got told off my her for invading her privacy.

3. I was shooting a bakery shop window and the shopkeeper challenged me and asked why am I taking pictures. I thought it is perfectly legally to take picture of shop windows?

Those experiences kind of put me off a bit. Am I doing it wrong? Am I just unlucky? Or are the British more photo phobic?
