I have a new X-E1 with the 18-55 zoom. My question is - does a prime have any benefits over a versatile zoom, how much sharper (if at all) is a prime lens vs a zoom? I may want to buy lenses in the future but as my zoom covers a lot of the primes focal lengths, would I be wasting my money?

I know from reading these pages some are passionate about primes - convince me!

Not just sharpness: a good prime may also have better contrast, colour, lower field curvature, better control of chromatic aberration etc.

Don't convince yourself that you're wasting money by covering the same focal length as you have in a zoom. If you're walking around and you see five different subjects, all of which ideally require distinct focal lengths, the advantage of a zoom is being able to quickly adjust to all five subjects, rather than having to change lenses each time.
