As you mentioned, the raw conversion plays a role. I did conversions with both Lightroom 5.3 and Capture One Pro 7. I didn't do a lot of tone correction with either before I did NR. I turn sharpening off before NR.

LR had trouble in the lower left with getting a full black; CO did very well.

However, CO does some camera & iso specific NR as part of its conversion; I find it better than LR but not as good as a dedicated plug in. When I work with ISO 6400 files, I generally use this file to do further NR with Noiseware.

Here is a CO conversion followed by NR in Noiseware with default settings plus a bit of sharpening.
