Edge Sharpness: When is it really important?

I am curious to know other's ideas about the importance of edge sharpness in your personal photos, and in places like galleries and museums, where photos are on display.  For example, if you see a great photo hanging on the wall, do you stray away from the subject to check out the sharpness at the edges?  Obviously, a very mushy, blurry edge is noticeable when searched for, or even jumps out at you from afar.  But do you go searching for it?

How bad does a lens's edge sharpness have to be before you will not use it, or buy it?
