Different strokes for different folks. Some people don't take well to being instructed and prefer to be given room to figure it out themselves. Others need someone holding their hand the whole way.

I will say though that better gear means nothing without the technique to back it up. My first months with a DSLR are were spent in point and shoot mode, and I didn't see much of an improvement until my mum got me a book on photography.
