agreed, he may have a slightly off copy of the 400 f/5.6. My 400 f/5.6L looks sharp and contrasty wide open, and since my camera (60D) only autofocuses it at f/5.6, that is where the aperture stays 99% of the time.

Still, the important thing is that the Tamron is in the same ballpark, is inexpensive, has image stabilization, and has a longer focal length. The real question for bird and action photographers is whether the Tamron AF system is quick and accurate. If the Tamron AF can handle bird-in-flight shots, I predict that there will be huge interest.
