IMHO I think, in many cases, the answer is now yes.

The dynamic range is simply awesome. It seems to recover details from inky black, or white outs, that I simply didn't imagine was still there!

I've been thinking this somewhat with my Nex-5 and even moreso with the Nex-6.  I've tried making HDRs from 3 photos and did just as well in some cases with one.

Now you need to use RAW.  It's a lot easier if your software handles this more automatically similar to how DRO works.

Speaking of DRO, it wouldn't work unless there was more data in the sensor to pull up from the shadows.

I enhance the dynamic range more subtely (or at least I think its subtle) but extreme work is quite easy.
