Can I borrow your camera"

It's the tool of my trade so I get away without being asked, I'm
sure that my brother wouldn't lend me his best Armani suit (he's an
accountant) .. Or my cousin his new Bike (he's a motorcycle
courier) so they know better to ask ;-)

and it ended up being Chris Christofferson. Turns out he was trying to get an air conditioner (for the dog) into the back of his caddy. My dad offered his truck in exchange for his car.

Steven
i let friends/neighbors/family/friends of friends borrow all sorts
of stuff all the time, including our pickup truck, our cars,
ladders, power tools, camcorder, etc. but i would never let someone
borrow my DSLR! interesting because the vehicles easily cost at
least 15x more than the camera.

There is nothing I hate more than when someone close to me asks me to borrow my camera. When I was younger, I owned a cheapo Canon Sureshot P&S camera...lent it to my bro in law.

When I got it back, something was wrong with the zoom lens. It took pictures fine but seemed to have a weird skip after it zoomed out a certain distance. Also, my instructional manual was all wrinkled up!

People should be more considerate than to borrow camera equipment which is quite a personal thing.

I knew you would come through with a funny retort. You make this a funny and civilized place.

A kid a work wanted to ride my shovel head (old Harley for those that don't ride). After bugging me for a few weeks, I told him if he was man enough to kick start it he could take it around the block.

He tried kicking it over. The kick pedal wouldn't move. After several more tries he puts all his weight behind a turns the engine over. It doesn't start. He keeps trying and trying. His face is so red it looks like his head is going to pop.

He finally gives up a lays next to bike panting like he just ran a marathon. He couldn't get up to save his life. I dangled to keys in front of him and he never asked again.

Too bad cameras don't have kick starters.

If that will happen.. I will firts explain that its my hobby and I use it all the time... so no spare time for You LOL

If .. hypothetically some one would after my explanation istubbornly ask to borrow my camera etc. I will ask two questions:

1) Have u ever used DSLR, And can You use this one? if one cannot even understand the meaning of the word DSLR.... so thats it.

2) Do u know the price of these equipments? And can u afford replace my equipments if something bad happens to these gear?

If and if one has used DSLR and especially this spesific one and know the value of this gear AND I trust the person.. and One got enough money to buy a new equipments....why not. Piece of paper ... signature... one promise to buy me new ones if they ll be damaged.

But I do not know any such friend or relative who might come in to consideration in that matter.

But all my friends who use SLR cameras will not ever ask that from me. Perhaps they know me and my personality :)

Anyway .. P&S photographers: those relatives .... or my wife (she wont ask)

....she as U described cannot even understand the VCR or DVD player adjustments.... are all out of question.

Another question that sometimes bothers me little are those friends and relatives who asks me to take photos in weddings and parties etc.
Of course its sometimes interesting and its fun, but not all the time.

I would like to take photos when I feel it... not in every party and not go to every minor function in the county to taking photos.

I'm not a pro photographer. I just take photos for my own purposes: in my job and just for fun, for my hobbies.

I think that pros and more advanced amateur photographers than me can suffer those demands and requests more. Drawbacks, of course, like in every job has..some..

I know that people with cameras, taking photos are allways under the request(demand): "could You do me a favor and take a foto?" Thats the price we have to pay when "shooting" among people.

We have to....... BUT NOT ALL THE TIME.... agree to that request. My opinion is that when I feel that way Ill agree and take a pic to please someone.. what a heck .. small gesture. I can send the pic via e-mail (God pless the technology). In parties, weddings etc. when I'm as a invited guest .. not asked to take photos... ill act like guest. That's it. When asked Ill say no if I feel to say no .. sometimes yes. Sometimes when i have said no and I have took the camera with me into party etc. I just say to people that Im not a official photographer I'm a guest like them. Usually it works....

-Ari-
You hit the nail on the head!

People who know the value of the camera and/or have an SLR will not
ask. People who think "cameras are cameras, what's the big deal"
are the ones that WILL ask!

Saying no can easily be done, it's just not so easy to do. How
about your wife, who can't understand what's wrong with the 20 inch
TV in the living room asks??? Now that's a really funny one.

-taking photos and flyfishing, that's all what matters -

You know whats annoying, there's this film guy that I've been suggesting he go digital, he was using an elan 2 and wanted an eos3, told him forget the eos3 for now, that it was more important for him to learn digital, that he should get a d60 ( this was six months ago) so that he could start on the road to digital, no he says, he's just starting out and believes it's better to go thru the school of hard knocks, to learn discipline, I try and explain that digital doesn't mean your lazy and you'll learn faster, no he says, he wants an eos 3 with a power booster and so he gets it. No d60 for this puppy.

Then two days ago he gives me a call, asks if he can borrow my 10d because the client wants digital files, he doesn't know what compact flash card capacity to use, he wants to borrow those too, he's thinking he'll take around 80 shots, I tell him I don't lend out my 10d

but he can use the d30 if he wants, asks what settings to use and if it's good enough for 8x10 blah,blah,blah...sorry if I'm ranting but I told this guy what he needed to do and he didn't listen, now he wants to use my equipment to make up for his equipment shortcomings, this really annoys me, plus the fact that I saved and struggled to buy all this new equipment and now this guy expects to use it?? For the most part I like the guy, he's nice enough and all but for some reason, I find his request very presumptious.
Thanks for listening, I feel better now, I'll loan him my d30 but no 10d.

What do you do when people say . . .

"Can I use your camera?"

"Can I borrow your camera?"

Some of us are just big burly and mean and can say NO without
batting an eye.

Some just can't say no to Mama, brother, or best friend.

I HATE having to lend a camera like the 10D to someone. It's not
usually someone far off that asks, but a close relative or best
friend. It's not that you don't want to lend it, it's that they
don't understand the concept of the camera. Some of them can't even
afford to replace it if they drop it!

And if you DO loan it, what lens do you put on it, the cheapest you
got, or your 28-70 L lens - hehehe

So how do you handle it? Do you have a "visitors" or "loaner"
camera for that purpose, or do you give a 3 hour lesson on how to
use the 10D, explain that the lens is worth more than the camera
body and let that baby go.

I have had fights just over the principle of the thing without even
ever getting asked - "you mean you wouldn't let me use your camera
if i asked?, I can't believe you", but I haven't gotten asked - :)

So i guess there are 2 questions here

Do you get asked?
How do you handle it?

I'm surprised you'd lend him anything after all that. Since he wants the "school of hard knocks", let him start classes by losing a client or two due to his know-it-all attutude.

You'd ask your mom, brother, or best friend for a cash deposit?

I guess it truly depends on your relationship and their attitude.
Any of those people in my life would definately repair any accidental damage.

mike
the replacement cost of the equipment loaned!

Well funny on occasion maybe ;-) - as for civilized, I doubt that, it's a cut throat forum with very little Decorum, the Olympus forum was totally unique in it's sense of humour and pleasant air - You yourself stick out here as one of the VERY FEW consistently diplomatic and pleasant people.. :)

That's why I like Rich-O's forum, it's populated by Ex-Oly people (which really WERE like a family rather than playground protagenists) , the problem is that it gets seldom used :(

The right answer is a polite "no." No explanations or reasons. Just say, "no, I'm sorry. I keep my camera right here with me at all times."

Abu Mumia

Always a "no". My wife even asks or goes tro get it to take a picture of the kids and I get very annoyed. If you want to lend cameras out use snappies.

Wasn't it Ben Franlin that said:

"Never a borrower or lender be" ... that is to say, there are two
parts to that.

Nobody in my circle of friends cares enough about images to need
a 10D, but I would lend my G2 out.
