If it really was the case, then you probably wouldn't notice any focus breathing at all.

You can have one 200 zoom that is really 187 at infinity focus and another 200mm zoom that is 197 at infinity focus, and still have marked focus breathing at close focusing.

A few mm more or less at such focal lengths would make almost no difference.

At infinity, yes, but not necessarily at closer focusing.



Much more pronounced at closer distance like famous afs Nikon80-400 can be as short as 265mm at closer distance
