I've always hated the 30s limit.   It's just an obscenely easy thing to add to the camera, and forcing me to take out a stopwatch to time a shot seems almost neanderthal.

I'd really like to get an answer from Nikon on this, as I do a lot of long exposures (average about 2 mins), and it's always a pain to sit there with the timer on my iphone.
