What you're talking about is Canon's G-series (current model is G15).

As I recall though the A series never had the premium pricing of the G series. This was in the days when photography didn't mean as much as it does to me today, so I would never have considered a G series back then. (Let alone what I've just spent on an RX100M2!)

Maybe that's why they stopped the A series - to steer consumers towards the G series.

the A650 basically was the same lens and sensor as the G9(?) but cheaper and the firmware could be upgraded with CHDK
