The time has come for a more affordable long lens

The industry keeps thinking that lenses over 300 or 400 mm have to be big expensive pro monsters.  But there's a growing demand out there for longer lenses at an affordable price, and there's no reason why some company can't supply them.  Because most people who want a longer lens do not need that lens to also be fast!  With today's high-ISO performance and live-view focusing, there's no reason a long lens can't be slow, like f6.3 or even f8.  Come on, someone: give us a good performing 450mm f6.3 at an affordable price.  People will gobble it up.

As I write this, it occurs to me that if a long lens is slow, and has its peak sharpness wide open, there would never be any reason to stop it down.  You could leave out the diaphragm.

It occurs to me that if anyone comes up with a good off-axis mirror design, yielding a mirror lens without donut bokeh, that might be a competitive alternative in this category too.
