Re: Problem with a G11

This is very nuch a shot in the dark, as it does not relate to the G11 but it may be a problem similar to one experienced with a G9.

It is possible that this is a power malfunction caused by the camera switching on and displacing an already loose mainboard in the camera, thus causing it to switch off. My brother had a problem with his G9 which intermittently started, before finally refusing to start at all. This was caused by the screws holding the mainboard in place coming loose and causing a short circuit in the camera. This problem was known to Canon, but they did not institute a recall, but did repair free of charge if the camera was sent for repair and was found to have the fault. It is possible that this sort of thing had not been rectified by the time the G11 was released, and therefore the mainboard may have become loose causing this fault.

Have you checked to see whether there are any reported instances of similar faults with the G11 across the internet? If there are then it may be a known fault, and known to Canon, but not widely broadcast.

It may also be worth checking with a reputable canon repairer to see whether they know if there are any instances of this problem. This was how I found a repairer for my brother's camera - when I described the fault to them they advised sending it in, saying that it would be repaired for free if the fault was caused by the screw problem. They were true to their word.
