Re: FujiFilm 14 vs 18 lens

I use both, and could not think of using my Fuji without any of them. The difference in field of view is great, and they are very different lenses for different jobs. The 14 is the architecture photographer dream: better corrected than anything I have used with that field of view, free from flare, it has only one flaw, a lens shade I keep quarrelling with. It can also be used for street photography with manual focusing in hyperfocal mode, something not so easy with the 18.

The 18 is smaller, a joy to handle (I changed the horrible plastic shade with a vented metal one that is very good) and is invaluable for what can be called portrait with environment: it separates planes very graciously, something that reminds me of my old pre-asph Summicron 35. The sharpness problem in the corners is limited to a very small area in the real corners, so if you want a clinical image you just crop a narrow strip all around and the rest is quite good without losing that many pixels. What's more annoying is CA in the outer area: sometimes it's hard to correct, but it never compromised any of my prints (and I print A2).

And I don't think the zoom is a real replacement for the 18. Size and balance on camera are very different. The sense of freedom the prime can give you is not something the 18-55 can offer: it's more a lens for the traveller that does not desire to fiddle with lens changes.
