There will be nostalgic people that still shot film. It is harder and harder to find good films.

The quality of digital cameras surpassed the film years ago. You can get much more photos on a card and you can shoot again if something got wrong as you can review your shots immediately after.

The initial cost is higher but the ownership cost is much lower because you don't develop film to see if you have some keepers.

As you are used with SLRs I would recommend to get a dSLR with APS-C sensor. You are accustomed with Canon so this may be the first choice. There are two other dSLR manufacturers left Pentax and Nikon. You can get an older model like Nikon D90 or Canon 60D that are at clearing prices.

Nikon D90, ISO 2200, f/5.6 and 1/15 s

You can find lots of pictures taken with Nikon D90 in my galleries and you can search for Canon 60D in other members' galleries.
