I'd strongly advise against mucking around with the system devices in the PC. For what you know, you may lose the said device itself for good, since the drivers (and other files too) may not be resident on the HD, or in an obscure location, thus you may end up with an even bigger problem than just a card-reading problem. But of course if you are well into such stuff and really know what you are doing, that's a different matter.

I'd suggest you put back the card that the PC could recognise. If it works, then uncouple the card through the normal safe removal process. Then with the card successfully removed, shut down and restart the PC. After restarting, put in the previously unrecognised card, or another new card, and see how it goes. It may or may not work, though.
