Diamond Fuji

In honor of Mt. Fuji's being recognized as a World Heritage Site this year:

”Diamond Fuji" is a phenomenon observable from many locations in the greater Tokyo area. It refers to a "conjunction" of the sun with the peak of Mt. Fuji (sunset/sunrise), and has particularly religious significance to mountain worship cults. Due to the movement of the earth around the sun, the phenomenon can appear only for a few days at any given spot, and photographers gather in droves at popular venues like Mt. Takao and Lake Yamanaka to capture the scene. A couple of days ago, however, a Facebook acquaintance informed me of a couple of virtually unknown local mountains where conditions were currently good, so last night I climbed Mt. Daimyojin (trailhead is only 15 minutes' drive from my house) and after an hour's hike found myself at the peak alone with Mt. Fuji--and the sun.
