Ponce de Leon
For a long time, it was thought that Ponce de Leon landed in ("discovered") Florida in the vicinity of St. Augustine. Much doubt has bee raised on this claim in recent years, with several theories suggesting other landing sites. One of the new candidates for the landing site is just south of Melbourne Beach, Florida. I am not suggesting this to be fact, but advocates for this site have gotten the County to rename a beachside park to "Juan Ponce de Leon Landing", had it made into a Historical site, and raised enough money, privately and through grants, to have a 10 foot statue of him made and installed on the park grounds. It was years in the making and just unveiled earlier this week. Here are some pictures of the statue. Taken with my ZS19 between rain showers.
