I guess that you've tried pre-focussing (by programming AF/AE rear button of the Canon, for example) so you would have to focus less often, only when the subject distance changes?

My current interest is photographing dogs at play and in competition (agility, obedience, occasionally tracking). There are not many situations where I can predict the plane of focus, and even fewer where the plane of focus stays constant for even a fraction of a second.Because motion is usually quite rapid, I usually need a fast shutter speed. 1/250 is almost always too slow, 1/500 is necessary to assure stop motion. I've tried prefocus, zone focus with small aperture (for DOF) and, I think, every other trick there is. Prefocus with a zone and small aperture works the best - but I really do need much faster focus acquisition.
