General Photography Completely Devalued?

I had a conversation with a good friend who at one time made some good money with stock photography. As a photographer he was a bit of a generalist. He sold lots of everything from wildlife, landscapes, still life and travel images. Lately he is selling less and less. Which begs me to ask the question- What photographs/subjects have any real value?

I'm not talking about selling $500 worth of prints in a year. Let' say I want to make $7000 + a year, which roughly equals minimum wage at 20 hours a week. What would I have to photograph? Can this be done without turning to weddings and senior portraits?
