D700 vs D300. Full frame vs crop. Good body vs good lens.

Hi everyone!
After some years using an entry level dslr i decided to upgrade. I would love to hear advice from you on what would be the best kit for me.

To start:

Im not a professional.

The type of pictures I take are mostly portraits (a lot in low light conditions) and i also travel a lot taking landscapes.

My budget (lens included) would not be more than 2000 usd and hopefully less.

Im willing to buy used gear

After reading a lot of reviews, i really like the D700 (around 1300 usd used) with a good 28-75 2.8 (tamron or sigma for usd 300-400) and maybe a 85mm 1.8 for portraits (300 usd +/-).

My main doubts are:

  • I'm not sure if i need full frame.
  • Mostly i want image quality and I'm wondering if i could get similar or better output with a D300s or a D90 and use the extra bucks on better glass.
  • Am i choosing a huge and great camera with the d700 but with limited lenses??
  • are there other body/lens combinations i should be considering??
  • what is the meaning of life?? (Ok ok. Maybe you dont have to answer this one... Hehehe)

What would you buy??

Thanks a lot for your help!
