Thanks for posting an image. Your instincts are right. You need a lot more DOF.

Start by using a very small aperture (like f/16). Hard-surfaced objects like this can take a lot of sharpening, so diffraction isn't much of an issue here.

However your DOF will still be inadequate (short of using a TS-E lens), so as was suggested I'd look into some focus stacking software. I like Zerene Stacker...

As for the wrinkled surface/backdrop, just use something with no texture.
