I said I was looking for an on-camera flash solution; I never restricted it to the pop-up fash.

I agree that device is a bit too intimidating though.

But I've seen a few solution where a flash-head is aimed straight up and then fitted with some reflection device. Those look interesting.

Well your post inspired me to try this on-camera softbox so I'll let you know how it goes... I intend to mostly use it as on-camera fill flash outdoors. But I do most of my indoor on-camera flash bouncing it. I do this by turning the flash head aimed straight-up as you say to bounce off [hopefully] white ceilings, but I also use a white 4x6 index card rubber-banded to the back of the flash head simultaneously. So I am bouncing light forward and off the ceiling at the same time.  Total cost for the index card and rubber band- $.09
