Let us know how that 35-70 works

I tried to buy one on a couple of occasions. One of my teachers uses it on a d2x for portraits in studio and is very happy with the overall package.

I never found a clean copy and so I bought a 24-70 instead. I use it on a d800, and I'm going to make a little plug for that camera as something that is very flexible in creating different looks from one body. The 1.2x and 5:4 crops can be very convenient for starters, and it really likes the 24-70. You can crop into 1.2x when you need to get an 85mm look, for example.

For portraits it just loves the 85 1.8g. And 70-200 vr1.

So, it's a bit of a big heavy beast of a camera, but it does a lot of things very well.
