How about a D700 for $1500, little bit more shutter actuations, ya know? Then take the left over $200 or so and buy a 50 1.8G. Will kind of solve both problems.

I've had the 58 for a few weeks now. Between 1.4 and 2 it is pretty magical for single subject portraits. It's a very unique lens. If you get it, you'll probably shoot with it exclusively for a good while, maybe even forever You'll be happy with either decision. But in a few years the D700 will be a good bit outdated and decrease in value. As where the 58 will still be highly sought after.
