i'm pretty sure i found the function of the [AF-ON] setting. if i'm reading the manual right, it's to be able to auto focus while in manual focus mode by pushing the /AE-AF/ button.

AF-ON also allows me to force the camera to autofocus without locking the exposure at the same time.

Not sure I get the logic of this approach. I prefer 1st locking exposure with AE lock, then select focus point with half press, then recompose and take the shot. I guess with AF-ON you focus first, then AE Lock, and then take the shot?

Well, you don't always need an AE-lock.  And by that, I mean you don't always need to lock exposure for a period of time prior to shooting.  An example would be if you're photographing a cyclist while you're being driven beside them in a car.  You would AF-lock on them so the focus wouldn't be thrown off by objects that briefly get between you and the subject, or by you accidentally moving the AF point off of the subject.  But you don't want to lock the exposure because you may be going in and out of shaded areas.

Or perhaps you're trying to photograph a performer and the lighting is frequently changing.

There are other scenarios of course, but those are two that come to mind immediately.

I use AF-ON and AF/AE-LOCK, depending on the situation.   Generally speaking, though, I use AF/AE-LOCK more often.
