Try adding a longer Arca-Swiss style lens plate. Almost any lens plate will do. It will give you a larger grip and a quick way to take it off the monopod. Very secure. Then use a single axis monopod head from RRS or Acratech for better support and ease of use. Does the lens have a shoulder strap? I would not carry a $9k lens by the monopod, but that's just me.

I'm not familiar with the Manfrotto heads.
